We want to compliment the teens’ class for their recent efforts shopping for the Christmas angels this past December. We also commend them for collecting money to give to a West Side member. That member expresses her appreciation not only for the money but also for the visit by the teens. You are to be commended for thinking of others!

2011 in Retrospect …

With 2011 coming to an end, sometimes putting a year’s events on one page allows us to see what God has been doing in the life of the church. What better place to begin than with the five baptisms: Matthew Partlow, Brittany Fowler, and Sydney Rager. This past Sunday, Jacky Moore baptized Jonas Martin and Kim Joyner. At the jail, eleven people were baptized in 2011.

Along with a workday planned in the fall with upkeep projects, Sheila Miller painted the tiles on the outside of the building. Jacky & Nona Moore, Tommy Moore, and Michael Driver stripped and refinished the flooring in the Fellowship Hall.

Johnny Shumate designed our new logo for the church, celebrating the church’s impact in our community for half a century.

Three times this past year West Side Church sponsored a Fish Fry. The first two were to help with medical expenses for Larry & Phyllis Camp and John & Eva England. The third fish fry helped TCCHS’s athletic teams with their travel budget. Along with the fish fries, we served lunch to both the football and basketball teams of TCCHS.

We welcomed Doug Boley on board as deacon, who also received good news that his cancer is in remission. We also welcomed the Partlows who officially moved to Elkton in the fall to work full time with West Side Church.

Our hearts were saddened because we were forced to let go and say goodbye to Wilmon Moore, Tony Camp, and Libby Miller who passed on to receive their great reward.

We continue ministering at the jail and opened up our church for CASA and AA meetings. Our building opened even more when, this fall, we allowed Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts to begin meeting. The Cub Scouts collected canned and staple foods for our pantry.

We helped 47 Todd County families with groceries, gas, and electric bills. We collected school supplies and distributed shirts and clothes to Todd County residents. We collected funds for 13 families where our teens used the money to buy Christmas gifts for them. We also prepared 16 food baskets for several at West Side and in the community. Money was also collected as a Christmas present for one person at West Side. As a part of our “Grief Basket Ministry,” over 130 grief baskets were prepared and delivered to Todd County funeral homes.

I preached a sermon series on the seven miraculous signs from John’s Gospel, a series on the Holy Habits, and began walking the church through the New Testament on Sunday nights. Do you remember both the glasses sermon and the cross that Nathaniel made?

We sponsored a lane for “Relay for Life” and the ladies published a cookbook to raise funds to fight cancer.

Remember the fellowship and watching fireworks days before July 4th, then Singing on the Square to usher in Christmas?

No doubt you can remember far more events, as these are just a sampling. Let’s look forward to 2012 and remember that in all things . . . solo gloria dei!

Congratulations to …

Peggy Willoughby, Lindsey Sanders, Jonas Martin, and Kim Joyner were baptized December 18th at West Side. We want to extend to each one of them the very best as they begin their new journey as Christians.

Savannah Moore, who participated in the TCCHS production of Miracle on 34th Street with the choir from North Todd.

Congratulations to Robert Sawyers who said (or sang) the books of the New Testament recently.

The Carolers on the Square were a hit! Thanks to all who helped make the singing so wonderful. This space was reserved for the names of those who sang, but so many people sang that this space was not large enough to hold the names. What a great statement of commitment by West Side.

Email: Dr. Jon Partlow

West Side wants to welcome Jon Partlow to our congregation as our pulpit minister. A native of Portland, Oregon, Brother Jon has a bachelor’s degree from Harding University, a master’s degree in divinity from Harding Graduate School of Religion in Memphis, and a second master’s of education degree from East Tennessee State University. A 2007 alumnus of Harding Graduate School of Memphis with a doctor of ministry degree, Brother Jon has served in most recent years as pulpit minister in Madisonville, KY, at the Pennyrile Church of Christ. Prior to Madisonville, Brother Jon worked with two separate congregations in Greeneville, TN. Brother Jon’s wife, Cile (short for Lucile), a native of Carthage, TN, has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education along with a master’s degree in special education. He and his wife are the parents of Taylor (May 1993), Jonathan (August 1996), and Matthew (February 1999).

Brother Jon states that many of his and Cile’s interests revolve around the activities their children enjoy – track and cross country, baseball, karate, Boy Scouts, and horses. Taylor, a junior, is an avid reader, is a lover of horses, and has lettered in track. Jonathan, an 8th grader, also has been involved in track and cross country and the Boy Scouts, loves baseball, and enjoys reading as well. Matthew, a 6th grader, enjoys reading and karate, loves baseball and the New York Yankees, and is also involved in the Boy Scouts. Brother Jon’s personal interests include, when possible, golf, reading selective novels, storytelling, creative writing, and listening to music.

In describing his background, Brother Jon credits his godly parents for instilling in him, his three brothers, and sister solid Christian values and principles. A published author of several articles, Brother Jon states, “People not only want to hear the Gospel, but also want an emotional connection with it; effective preaching engages the heart and mind.”

West Side would like to take this opportunity to welcome Brother Jon, Cile, Taylor, Jonathan, and Matthew to our congregation. We hope that the years that follow will bring strong unity to West Side and a stronger dedication to serving God in our daily lives.
